STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS - FEBRUARY 17, 2026

WORD OF THE WEEK:

BONHOMIE

bon·ho·mie (bŏn′ə-mē′)

PART OF SPEECH/DEFINITION:

NOUN: 1. A pleasant and affable disposition; geniality.

SENTENCE: The new students looked friendly enough and worked assiduously to fit in, but their wan look and lacunas of expression and candor lacked a certain bonhomie with their classmates.

Stuff You Need to Know

Good Tuesday morning Spartans. Today we will learn about Matthew Henson, who made history as one of the first two people to ever reach the North Pole. After several unsuccessful attempts, Henson, along with partner Robert Peary, finally reached the northernmost part of the planet. Unfortunately, as was common in the era, Peary received lots of accolades while Henson mostly went unrecognized. It wasn’t until the year 2000, after he had already died, that Matthew Henson received the National Geographic Hubbard Medal. This has been your Black History Fact for Tuesday, February 17. Remember, Black History is American history!
