OAK LAWN’S RODRIGUEZ-CABRERA BECOMES CENTERPIECE OF SOCCER DEFENSE

As the last line of defense against attacking opponents, the sweeper’s job is essential for success on the soccer field. Oak Lawn Community High School’s girls soccer team has just the player to fill that role in Emily Rodriguez-Cabrera.

Only a sophomore, she took the role and ran with it this season. Her play elevated the entire Spartan defense, which is playing much better than it did a season ago.

“Emily has quickly solidified her place as a centerpiece of our defense,” head coach John Faro said. “She has excellent field vision and always takes the best angle to beat the opponent’s strikers to the ball.

“Easily able to make clearances even on 50-50 balls and striking volleys mid-flight, she is an integral part of our improved defense as we are allowing only 1.4 goals a game, which is almost a full goal improvement from last season. We are looking forward to watching her grow in her role and continue to lead our defense.”
