BERKERY HELPS WILL SPARTAN SOFTBALL TO COMEBACK WIN

Last Saturday, the Oak Lawn Community High School softball team trailed Niles West, 8-2, in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and nobody on base at The Rumble in Rosemont. However, that’s when the Spartans exploded for seven runs and escaped with the improbable 9-8 victory.

Versatile senior Kaitlyn Berkery played a major role in the come-from-behind win. She came on to pitch in relief and contained the Niles West bats. Then, she hit a big triple and scored a run in the middle of the seventh-inning rally.

“Kaitlyn is doing it all for the Spartans,” head coach Shawn Neubauer said. “She will pitch in tight situations. She will roam the outfield, catching flyballs in the gap and at the fence. If needed, she will play most infield positions and play them well.

“Kaitlyn’s hitting is just as impressive as her defense. She will turn singles into doubles and doubles into triples. She is a force on the basepaths, stealing bases with ease. Kaitlyn was a huge part in the team’s come-from-behind win over Niles West.”
