The fall sports season saw school records fall and championship plaques raised at Oak Lawn Community High School. The Spartans found tons of success across the board both as teams and as individuals.
While girls volleyball set a team record for single-season victories and team aces along with winning the South Suburban Conference Red championship for the second-consecutive year, the boys golf team won its first conference title since 2004, and girls tennis team won its first conference crown since 2007.
Then, there was the girls cross country team, who set all kinds of personal best times and advanced to the Illinois High School Association Sectional meet as a team.
Here’s a look at each fall sport.
In Girls Volleyball, Maryam Hussein, Hailey Wierzgac, Sinead Conroy, and Emma McAuliffe earned all-conference honors. Wierzgac was named as the team’s Most Valuable Player, and Kaitlyn Berkery and Maeve O’Sullivan shared the Sportsmanship award. Head coach Kathleen Miller was named as the SSC Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year.
In Boys Golf, the all-conference selections were Shane Mulcahy (second place), Payton Zager (seventh place), and Chris Walker (ninth place). Sectional Qualifiers included Dacoda Jones, Mulcahy, Walker, and Ethan Barnes. Mulcahy was named Team MVP, and Jack Westin and Walker shared the Sportsmanship Award. Head coach Shawn Neubauer was named as the SSC Coach of the Year. The Junior Varsity team also was the conference championship.
In Girls Tennis, the all-conference players were Jessica Komperda (first place at second singles), Eliza Janik and Haley Meskill (second place at first doubles), Julia Bolcarovic and Ghofran Ouarerhni (first place at second doubles), and Madyson Lane and Hannah Leanos (first place at third doubles). Komperda and Janik were chosen as the team MVPs, and Meskill got the Sportsmanship Award. The Spartans were selected for the SSC Red Team Sportsmanship Award. The junior varsity team also won the SSC Red championship.
In, Girls Cross Country, the team qualified for the sectional, and the all-conference runners were Molly Sheridan (second place) and Naliyah Anderson (fifth place). Sheridan was Team MVP, and Hadeel Yasin and Julia Kurnat shared the Sportsmanship Award.
In Boys Cross Country, Andrew Leon qualified for the IHSA Sectional meet, he was an All-conference runner (10th place), and he was the Team MVP. Gavin Rybicki was the Sportsmanship Award winner.
In Girls Swimming and Diving, Amelia Fudala was all conference in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. Alessandra Gabriel was all conference in the 500-yard freestyle. Gabriel earned honors as the Team MVP, and Klaudia Latocha was the Sportsmanship Award winner.
In Girls Golf, Katie Casey qualified for the IHSA Sectional and was an all-conference golfer with a ninth-place finish. She was the Team MVP, and Annie McGrath won the Sportsmanship Award. Head coach Kate Mellone was chosen as the SSC Coach of the Year.
In Boys Soccer, all-conference selections included Simon Komperda, Dylan Walsh, Giovanni Gonzalez, and Tristan Kramarz. Kramarz and Walsh shared Team MVP honors, while Joshua Torres received the Sportsmanship Award. The junior varsity team won the SSC Red Championship.
In Football, the all-conference selections were Alex Soto, Luke Mahoney, John Olejniczak, and Tadhg Walsh. Walsh took home the Team MVP Award, and Rocco Santoro was the Sportsmanship Award winner.
