At the beginning of the boys cross country season, Juan Macias was the eighteenth best runner on the Oak Lawn Community High School team. However, by the time the season ended at the Illinois High School Association Sectional meet, he had risen to the third best for the Spartans.
In August his time for three miles was in the mid-19-minute range, but by October that time dropped to almost breaking 18 minutes.
“Juan has had the best month on the cross country team,” head coach Marty Chappetto said. “Juan has continued to drive himself forward. He exemplifies key qualities of leadership motivating young runners. He also does what is needed in silence over the summer to lay the groundwork for these breakthroughs.”
