OAK LAWN BOYS GOLF SWEEPS SSC RED CHAMPIONSHIPS

It was a South Suburban Conference Red meet to remember for the Oak Lawn Community High School boys golf team at Cog Hill on September 23. The Spartans had quite the performance on the tough course and won their first conference crown since 2004.

Three Top 10 finishers led the charge for Oak Lawn and earned all-conference honors. Shane Mulcahy took second place with an 81, Payton Zager was seventh with an 87, and Chris Walker shot an 88 to finish ninth.

“We had an unbelievable performance today at Cog Hill,” head coach Shawn Neubauer said. I’m proud of the way the team competed today and all season.”

The Spartans also took home the SSC Red Sportsmanship award, which is voted on by the coaches in the conference.

“This is a great honor and speaks volumes of their character and how they conduct themselves on the course,” Neubauer said. “This is a program victory.”

In addition, Neubauer was named as the SSC Red Coach of the Year.

The junior varsity team also won the SSC Red title. They had three Top 10 finishers as well. Jack Dempsey finished in third, Patrick Driscoll was fourth, and Charlie Dell finished in 10th place. For the JV team, it was the second consecutive conference title.

“Assistant coach Kevin Walery and I were so happy the way the boys performed, not only at the conference season but all season,” Neubauer said. “We knew that these players had the potential to do something special. We knew it would be a close match with crosstown rival Richards and with Evergreen Park, who has been at the top of the conference multiple years in a row. To win conference not only at the varsity level but also the JV level, it was a special moment for our program and for our school.”
