OAK LAWN’S RUIZ MAKES GREAT STRIDES FOR GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

It’s never too late to get started. Just ask Oak Lawn Community High School senior Jocelyn Ruiz. Although she had never competed in a high school sport until her junior year, she made the most of her two years on the girls cross country team.

In fact, she dropped more than six minutes off her time from her first race last year to her final race this year. And she emerged a one of the top-five runners for the Spartans. She finished with a time of 23:36 in the Illinois High School Association Regional meet.

“Jocelyn is a true testament to the fact that if you work hard and do it consistently, then you will succeed,” head coach Sue Szala said. “Jocelyn joined cross country as a junior. She worked hard it. She then continued with track and came out all summer to run.”
