Ward Heats Up To Lead Spartans To Third Place, Makes All-Tournament Team

Each week the Athletic Department selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week. The recipient for the week of December 22 and 29 is senior boys basketball player Trey Ward.

During the winter break, Ward was named to the Effingham/Teutopolis Christmas Classic all-tournament team after averaging 21.3 points per game over a four-game stretch. For the tournament, he hit 21 of 25 free throws and sank 12 three pointers.

In the 69-64 double-overtime win over Champaign Centennial to capture third place, Ward scored 32 points and went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. He also scored 22 points in the Spartans’ 79-47 victory over South Suburban Conference opponent Tinley Park last Friday night.
He is leading the team in scoring this season, averaging 21.1 points per game on 52.6 percent shooting from the field while shooting 49 percent from three-point range on close to 100 attempts.
Other nominees for Spartan Athlete of the Week included Anthony Bitner (Wrestling).
