Students earned third place at the Moraine Valley Community College's annual pastry decorating competition on October 29. Mrs. Jennifer Faro, Family & Consumer Science teacher, entered the competition with Baking and Pastry students juniors Faith Fitzgerald and Daisy Garcia and sophomore Adriana Hall. The competition required students to make filling and frosting from scratch, as well as decorate their cake in an eye-catching manner with at least 12 flowers.
Mrs. Faro was extremely proud of the students' dedication and hard work. "The students did an amazing job," she gushed.
Baking and Pastry is open to freshmen through seniors. Students practice preparation of different types of cookies, cakes, pastries and key culinary techniques such as meringue production and egg tempering. Candy making and specialty desserts such as crème brulee and cream puffs is also practiced. Science and math skills are reinforced through practical culinary lab experiences. Students should enroll in this course if they plan to pursue a career in the culinary field or have interest in baking and pastry arts.
