Staff Spotlight: Isela Ponce


OLCHS welcomes a new English/ELL teacher this year: Isela Ponce.  Isela teaches English 2 as well as Eng 2 ESL and Eng 3 ESL.  Isela and her husband Emanuel welcomed their son Tiago this year.

Isela earned her degree in English Secondary Education from DePaul University with a minor in Spanish.  She went on to National Louis University to earn her endorsement in English as a Second Language and earned her M.A. in Higher Education Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University.

Isela was the 2016-2018 Fellows Scholarship Recipient for ENLACE: Engaging Latino Communities for Education. She co-founded the Back of the Yards College Preparatory High School Dream Pursuers Scholarship and was also the co-sponsor of the Back of the Yards College Preparatory High School Dream Pursuers Dreamers and Allies Club.  In 2016 and 2017, she was the Louder than a Bomb Assistant Coach and from 2010-2012 she was a North American Cultural Ambassador in Madrid, Spain.

Isela is a LULAC IL Education Council 5238 Member.

Isela appreciates the diverse student population, available learning opportunities via technology, and the welcoming she has received from students and staff. She hopes to contribute to a tradition of providing students with rich academic opportunities as well as providing a space where students feel heard, respected and motivated to pursue the career of their choice.
