OLCHS received the 2019 ICECF Solar Grant which allows for the installation of solar panels on the roof of the Keneipp Stadium Concession Stand. The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation was established in December, 1999 as an independent foundation with a $225 million endowment provided by Commonwealth Edison. Its mission is to improve energy efficiency, advance the development and use of renewable energy resources, and protect natural areas and wildlife habitat in communities all across Illinois.
Science department chair Michael Bielski said, "This project is an outward expression of the internal commitment by OLCHS staff to partner with our community and provide students with access to 21st Century Technology for learning. Adding a solar energy component to our energy-conscious campus is a great opportunity to demonstrate clean, “green” practices to the students and community; to integrate hands-on, practical lessons for energy efficiency and sustainability into the STEM curriculum; and to build the interest of students to enter into renewable energy/technology and trade driven career fields.”
