Each week the Athletic Department selects two Spartan Athlete Spotlights of the Week. The recipients for the week of September 21 are sophomore boys cross country runner Adrian Nowobilski and junior girls cross country runner Nayeli Diaz.
Nowobilski has set a new personal best in every race he has competed in thus far. And although he is only a sophomore, he is the Spartans’ number-three varsity runner and has a three-mile personal best time of 18:47.
“Adrian is having a breakout 2020 season,” said boys head coach Sal Montes. “He started off the season with a third-place finish at Argo. He is currently the number-three runner, but he is closing in on being number two on the team.”
On the girls side, Diaz is finding that the sky is the limit for her potential. In her first-ever varsity meet, she dropped 3:00 from her previous best time and was the third-place finisher for Oak Lawn. She seemingly has come out of nowhere to shine for the Spartans.
“Nayeli has been on cross country for the past three years,” said girls head coach Sue Szala. “She originally joined the team to get in shape for soccer. However, Nayeli found her stride this year. She started the season off running for the junior varsity team, but two weeks ago, she was pushed up to varsity. She really proved what she was capable of doing.
“We were so proud of how hard she pushed herself. She has now earned herself a permanent position on the varsity team. Way to go Nayeli.”
