On Friday March 10, 2023, the Oak Lawn Community High School Music Department took the show on the road when the young musicians participated in the Deep Dish Music Festival at Columbia College Chicago, a popular music festival for local high school and college musicians. Twenty-one students in the Modern Music Ensemble and Modern Music Ensemble Workshop groups had the opportunity to perform for professionals in the pop music field at the event.
On Saturday, March 11, the electric guitar ensemble competed in the 56th Annual Mundelein Jazz Invitational. The Spartans had two outstanding soloist awards: Caio Cordeiro and Diego Davila. Music teacher Bob Habersat said, “I couldn't be prouder of the students in the modern music and electric guitar ensembles. These groups are mostly student led and they are putting out professional sounding products.” Department chair Eric Kallenborn added, “It’s fantastic that we have educators that offer amazing educational opportunities for our students outside of the classroom walls.”
