The Oak Lawn Community High School Athletic Department and the Spartan Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) selects a Spartan Athlete of the Week and an Athlete of the Month. The recipient for the month of May is senior softball player Mia Loya.

Loya threw a complete-game victory in the IHSA Class 4A Regional Championship game in late May. She didn’t allow an earned run, gave up only five hits and struck out three in the 2-1 win over Mother McAuley for the title. In the regional semifinal game earlier in the week, she had a double and a run scored.

“Mia showed great composure and determination in beating McAuley,” head coach Brian Frangella said. “She worked out of several tough spots and displayed a heart of a champion.”

This Spartan Athlete of the Month Award made it a clean sweep for the softball program this spring as Marisa Loya was AOM for March, Natalia Rafacz was AOM for April and now Mia is AOM for May. It capped off a very successful softball season where the team finished 21-12.
