Last weekend Maddie McGrath brought a determined mindset to the cold Illinois High School Association Sectional Girls Track and Field meet at Lyons Township, and when all was said and done, she brought home a first-place finish in the pole vault.
After dealing with knee problems throughout the season, she knew she had to make the most of her opportunity for glory. McGrath certainly did just that. She finished the meet by clearing a height of 9-feet-three-inches and advanced to this weekend’s IHSA Girls Track and Field State Finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
“Every practice we stress consistency, and that is what got Maddie the win,” head coach Brian Fiene said. “Maddie overcame a possible career-ending injury, took her time, worked hard and jumped right back into the lineup. Maddie is the athlete every coach would love to coach: a hard worker, dedicated, funny, and a great work ethic. She will be going places, just watch.”
