English Students Gain Insight From Buddhist Monk

Gen Zameling, a Buddhist monk, recently visited OLCHS.  His visit coincided with Dan Doyle and Jennifer Jepsen’s English 2 Honors study of Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. On September 11, 2018, Gen helped the students build background knowledge of Buddhism and meditation in order for them to gain a better understanding of the novel.

He opened with a short meditation exercise and involved the students in a lengthy, highly engaging exploration of Buddhism. Sophomore Alexis Judd reflected, “Not only did Gen’s visit teach me about his life, but I was able to connect it to mine.  My perspective has changed . . . including how to control my emotions.”
