Each week the Athletic Department selects two Spartan Athletes for Spotlight of the Week. The recipients for the week of October 26 are senior girls tennis player Aneta Dzielska and sophomore girls swimmer Neila Pirkl.
In sports it’s not always how you start but how you finish that leaves a lasting impression. For Dzielska that finish has been three years in the making. After joining the varsity tennis team as a sophomore, she has improved her game, and at the South Suburban Conference Red meet, she helped her number-two doubles team finish third. The big win came over second-seeded Richards.
“After losing to Richards during the season, it was a win in the making,” said head coach Sarah Zavala. “Aneta and her partner Vanessa worked to improve their game and beat them at the conference tournament. Then, they played three sets against Mother McAuley in the Illinois High School Association Sectional meet before getting knocked out. Aneta has played on the varsity since her sophomore year and has always taken initiative in her own game by learning slice and spin serves on her own. She is an excellent player that will be missed next year.”
In the pool, Pirkl has been making some waves of her own. After moving up to varsity from the junior varsity team, Neila performed well at the SSC Red meet. Pirkl finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:18.78, and she also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:03.71. In addition, she finished in the Top 6 in her other two swimming events at the conference meet, 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
“Neila has been a standout sophomore on the varsity swim team this year,” said head coach Derek Maciaga. “She worked very hard over the offseason to bring her times down and make the switch from JV to Varsity. We are excited to see what Neila can do for us next season.”
