Each week the Athletic Department selects two Spartan Athletes for Spotlight of the Week. The recipients for the week of October 19 are senior girls golfer Allysa Canales and freshman boys golfer Jacob Canvin.
Even though it was her very first year playing golf at Oak Lawn, Canales eventually posted some of the team’s top scores and led the Spartans to a second-place finish in the South Suburban Conference Red. She also earned all-conference honors along the way. Canales then continued her success into the postseason and was the top Oak Lawn girls golfer in the Illinois High School Association State Playoffs.
“Allysa decided to join golf for the first time in her senior year,” said golf head coach Pat Mayer. “She excelled in her first year and worked hard all year to improve her game. All her work paid off.”
For the boys golf team, it was another first-year player coming into his own. Canvin had the third best nine-hole average on the varsity team. He also played an integral role in Oak Lawn’s second-place finish in the SSC Red. He was named as an all-conference golfer.
“Jake has been one of the Spartans top golfers all year,” Mayer said. “Only a freshman, Jake has proven to be not only a top Spartan golfer but one of the top golfers in the SSC as well. He worked hard all year to improve his game.”
