Track and Field invitationals bring some of the best talent in the area together at one meet. So recently competing in the Lincoln-Way West Invite, the Titan Relays at Tinley Park, and the Spartan Invite at Oak Lawn Community High School really tested the best athletes around.
When those meets had ended, Oak Lawn senior Gavin Butler earned three first-place finishes in long jump, a first place in the 200-meter dash, a first place in a relay, and scored points for the Spartans in every event in which he competed. For all this success, OLCHS Athletic department named Butler as the Spartan Athlete of the Month for April.
At Lincoln-Way West, Butler took first in the long jump, anchored the first-place 800-meter relay team, anchored the third-place 400-meter relay team, and took fifth in the 100.
At the Titan Relays, Butler anchored the 800 relay and finished just 0.9 seconds off the OLCHS school record and anchored the 400 relay, which was 0.2 of breaking the school record. He also finished first in long jump again.
At the Spartan Invite, he jumped 21 feet in long jump and took first place with that personal record. He also won the 200 and anchored the 800-relay team and the 400-relay team. He was simply a points machine for the Spartans all month.
