A Message From Superintendent Michael Riordan

To all OLCHS Families:

I recently participated in a webinar provided by the Illinois State Board of Education regarding our planning for the 2021-2022 school year.  I am happy to share that the state leadership’s intentions are aligned with our intentions at OLCHS to fully reopen our school this fall.  A “full reopening” means that ALL students will be attending school every school day following our normal daily schedule.  Come August 18th, which is our first day of school, I look forward to opening our doors for all of our Spartan students back to campus, and I expect students to attend all classes and eat lunch on campus every school day.  A remote learning program will not be offered in 2021-2022.

However, I must emphasize that we are still waiting for clear and specific updated guidelines from the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Health, and there are still some unknown issues that could impact our planning.  These issues include:

  • Physical distancing expectation in school environments
  • Quarantine and isolation expectations as a result of “close contact” with an infected individual
  • Masking requirements for staff, students, and visitors
  • Vaccination and/or COVID testing expectations for staff, students and visitors.
At this point, the State of Illinois and OLCHS are NOT requiring students and staff to get the COVID vaccination.  However, all are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to do so.  The more individuals who are vaccinated in our school community, the greater our ability to keep our school fully open and operational.

The administration will continue to provide our families with more information as it becomes available.  Enjoy your summer break, and we look forward to our full reopening in August!

Sincerely,
Michael J. Riordan, Superintendent
Oak Lawn Community High School District 229
