Spartan Senior Eliana LaSpina took third at the sectional meet and qualified for the IHSA State Badminton Tournament. 5/5/2013 Badminton's LaSpina, Kestian-Hill Duo Qualify for State Finals
The girls' badminton team recently competed at its Illinois High School Association Sectional meet. After a tough day of competition and the dust cleared, a couple of Spartans earned their way to the IHSA State Finals set to take place next Friday at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston, Ill. Senior Eliana LaSpina took third in singles and qualified for the trip with a strong performance. It is the second straight year for LaSpina to take her racket to the state finals. The doubles' team of senior Rachel Kestian and junior Tara Hill also advanced to state by finishing in fourth place. In other sectional action for Oak Lawn, senior Claudia Maka and the junior doubles' team of Dee Dee Shatat and Melissa Greiman narrowly missed advancing by one match. "Please join me in congratulating the varsity girls on this accomplishment," head coach Patty Casey said. "All the girls played tough and represented our school with pride!"
4/29/2013 Spartan Fishing Team Recognized as "Team of the Year"
Plano and Frabill’s Illinois High Schools Fish Here Team of the Year was awarded to Oak Lawn Community High School’s Spartan Fishing Club which is led by Coach Chris Kuchyt. The Spartan Fishing Club has over 30 members, from freshmen to seniors. They meet weekly to learn about fishing and practice their skills both in the classroom and on the water. Some things that led the Spartans to Victory include bringing the Access to Fishing Rod and Reel Loaner Program to the Oak Lawn Public Library. Families can check out fishing poles just as they would a book. The team has worked with the Cook County Forest Preserve District Fisheries Division building fish cribs for forest preserve lakes. They have collected and donated rod and reel combos from community members and provided them to the Disabled Veterans Fishing Program. These are just a few examples of their community efforts.
4/25/2013 Freshman Allen Approaches All Challenges With Determination
The freshmen baseball team only has 20 members on its roster, but one of those freshmen is a female this year. And thus far, Danielle Allen has proven herself worthy of the opportunity with hard work, determination, a humble attitude and tremendous skill. She will face many challenges along the way competing against all boys, but her heart and desire certainly give her a good shot at succeeding in her goal to play ball.
