With 179 schools in the Illinois High School Association Class 3A State Track and Field classification and less than 30 athletes in each of the 400-meter dash, discus and shot put events, Patrick Michaels and Sergio Serna put themselves in some elite company this past weekend at the Lyons Township Sectional when they both qualified for the IHSA State Finals.
Michaels, who is only a junior, qualified by becoming the sectional champion in both the shot put and the discus events. He launched the discus 140 feet, 3 inches and threw the shot 52 feet, 7.5 inches. Both of these marks were personal records. Meanwhile, Serna, who is a senior and was seeded fifth going into the sectional competition, ran his way to a second-place finish with a time of 51.78 in the 400. This was a personal record for Serna as well. Both Spartans will compete in the IHSA State Finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this weekend.
To qualify for state, an athlete must either hit the qualifying time/mark at the sectional meet or finish first or second at the sectional.
