In order to achieve big things, athletes need to come up with big performances when the pressure is at its highest. Saturday in the Illinois High School Association Girls Bowling Sectional, the Lady Spartans did just that. Averaging 180 pins, Oak Lawn finished in fourth place and advanced to the State Tournament for the first time in 15 seasons. The tournament will take place in Rockford, starting this Thursday.
“The team’s thunderous energy and enthusiasm was non-stop as they fought for a Top-4 position,” said head coach Kelly Rumel.
Game 5 was really the pivotal moment for the bowlers. Scoring 1,023 pins, a 205 team average, the team put itself in a great position to advance. The contributions came from every direction.
“It was truly a team effort with everyone putting forth their best and playing like the winners they are,” Rumel said. “Assistant Coach Jim Mallek and I were very proud of the girls. All season we have told the girls, ‘This is our year.’”
The girls bowling team members include Allison Hebel, LeAnne Kommenich, Jayna Greiman, Lena Rayas, Stephanie Gasca, Andrea Yukne, Hailey Gershon, and Mia DiGrazia.
