Last weekend the girls swim team went into the South Suburban Conference Red swim meet seeded second behind rival Reavis for the third consecutive year. However, the additions to this year’s team helped push the Spartans past these expectations and earned the team a conference championship.

The meet began with varsity divers junior Jenna Cipriani taking first place and junior Grace Heneghan taking fourth. That gave the team an eight-point lead going into the swimming portion of the meet, which took place the next day.

As the swim portion started, the second-seeded 200-meter Medley relay team of Ellie Featherstone, Alyssa Bitner, Maddy Clarke, and Zeren Cebi won the event. Then, junior Peggy Fritz dropped 12 seconds from her personal record and placed second in the 200-meter Freestyle. Later, Freshman Claire Esguerra broke the varsity record in the 100-meter Backstroke with a time of 1:04.92. After, the Spartans never looked back.

All in all, swimmers earned All-Conference honors by winning the event. All-Conference swimmers included: Featherstone,Bitner, Clarke, and Cebi in the aforementioned 200 Medley Relay; Bitner, Cebi, Esguerra, and Lexi Zurita in the 200 Free Relay; Featherstone, Bitner, Fritz, and Esguerra in the 400 Free Relay; Featherstone in the 100 Free; Featherstone in the 50 Free; Cebi in the 200 Individual Medley; Esguerra in the 100 Backstroke; and Cipriani in Diving.

“This was really special,” said head coach TJ Zuzga. “What was really special is that we finally made it over the hump. We have taken second place for the past four years, and for the past two years, it came down to the last couple of events.”
