Questions-Answers from the August 23, 2012, Public Forum
PowerPoint Presentation, August 23, 2012 Questions-Answers from the July 19, 2012, Public Forum PowerPoint Handout, July 19, 2012 Public Forum Information:
Published Date: July 12, 2012 The Oak Lawn Community High School administration has scheduled two public forums to provide information and solicit feedback regarding plans for the 2013-2014 district budget. Students, parents, staff and constituents of District 229 are invited to attend one or both of the forums to be held in the OLCHS Media Center at 6:30 pm on the following dates: Thursday, August 23, 2012
Due to diminished revenues, the district will need to make significant expenditure reductions for the 2013-2014 school year. Over the past three years, OLCHS has cut expenditures via renegotiated teacher salaries, consolidation of administration positions, and reductions in extracurricular staffing. However, the district's annual operational expenses continue to outpace annual revenues. Additionally, the school district's reserve fund balances have been depleted to an unacceptable low level. Therefore, the administration is now considering cuts to academic programs by limiting students' course enrollment to six courses per semester instead of the current seven courses.
At each forum, the administration will present information regarding past, current and future budgeting issues, as well as the proposed reduction in student course enrollment. Members of the public will be able to ask questions and receive responses regarding the presentation, and are encouraged to provide suggestions to solve the district's budget dilemmas.
A panel of school officials will be present to address questions and suggestions, including Dr. Michael Riordan, Superintendent/Principal, Mr. Richard Hendricks, Assistant Superintendent, and Mr. Christopher Newton, Math Teacher and Union President. Finally, following the July 19th Public Forum, the school district will post the presentation materials, the questions asked, and the panel responses to the school's webpage for public review.
Additionally, members of the public will be able to submit questions and suggestions electronically between the July 19th and August 23rd Public Forums. These submittals and responses will also be published for public review on the school webpage.
For more information regarding the Public Forums, contact OLCHS Superintendent/Principal Michael Riordan at mriordan@olchs.org or 708-741-5601.
